Abstract: We study the behaviour of the size of the nth gaps as n tends to infinity. We give an exact formula for the leading term and an explicit bound on the remainder. The method is purely algebraic and combinatorial, using the perturbation formula a la Rayleigh-Schrodinger and the Fourier coefficients of the periodic potential.
